Experiential Learning

Since 1971, The Jacob Burns Community Legal Clinics (CLC) have provided members of the local community with critically needed legal services, while giving motivated law students the opportunity to view the legal system up close and get experience  as counselors and advocates for people in need. Closely supervised by faculty, students assist clients while learning about professional responsibility and honing their lawyering skills.

Through GW’s Field Placement Program, students earn academic credit for work in public interest, government, judicial, and nonprofit organizations in the DC area. Upper-level J.D. students may arrange placements in the fall and spring semesters and summer session for up to a total of eight hours of credit. The field placement program maintains an online list of  more than 150 government agencies, judges, courts, and nonprofit organizations at which  students may seek externship positions for credit. The program also posts online student evaluations of past placements, co-requisite courses, and the program overall.

The Law School’s professional skills curriculum challenges students to develop and enhance the lawyering skills required for effective representation in today’s complex practice of law, while giving them opportunities to put those skills into action. GW Law is dedicated to providing comprehensive instruction in professional skills and values, including academic opportunities in and outside the classroom for Juris Doctor degree candidates and an advanced course of graduate study in the Litigation and Dispute Resolution Master of Laws Program.

Good writing skills are a critical foundation for successful law practice. The Legal Research & Writing Program sets students on the right path in the required J.D. Legal Research and Writing  and Introduction to Advocacy courses. Upper-level courses allow students to further hone their skills. The Law School's Writing Center offers assistance to all students interested in improving their legal writing abilities.
