Tenleytown/American University

Neighborhood Guide

Named after long-time resident John Tennally and his tavern, the area became known as Tenleytown in the 19th century. Tenleytown, centered around Tenley Circle, served as the home of American University and all of its residents; it is also in close proximity to American University Park and Friendship Heights. The campus is somewhat far removed, although a shuttle bus runs from the Metro stop to the main campus.

Tenleytown is vibrant, friendly, and mostly residential. It is filled with tree-lined residential streets, many parks, and green spaces, and a hub of commerce and activity along Wisconsin Avenue. Tenleytown has excellent restaurants, many of which have lovely sidewalk cafes.

Housing options include large and small row houses, condominiums, and high-rise apartments; basement apartments are not uncommon.

Commute: Tenleytown is served by Metro’s Redline, with a stop called Tenleytown-AU; a variety of Metro buses also provide service between Tenleytown and GW. The commute is generally twenty-five to thirty minutes.

Rent estimates:   studios generally range from $1100 to $1400; one bedrooms begin at $1450. Basement apartments range greatly in price, as do row houses.
