Columbia Heights
Neighborhood Guide
Columbia Heights, located to the north of the U Street Corridor and east of Adams Morgan, has witnessed a significant re-growth since the beginning of the 21st century. In 1999, the city launched a revitalization initiative for the area based around a newly constructed metro stop, serving as a catalyst for the return of economic and residential development. Unlike many gentrified neighborhoods in the District, Columbia Heights has maintained its ethnic and economic diversity and now features high-priced luxury condominiums, apartments, and townhouses as well as public and middle-income housing.
The neighborhood highlight is Meridian Hill Park, a 16-acre park located on the original grounds of Columbian College, now The George Washington University. The park was designed as the U.S. response to the elaborate Italian gardens of European capital cities and features a 13-basin cascading fountain, a series of sculptures, and a human chess board. Other neighborhood fixtures include the newly refurbished Tivoli Theater, home of the GALA Hispanic Theater, and a blossoming shopping district.
Commute: Columbia Heights is situated on several Metrobus routes and is served by the Columbia Heights Metro Stop on the Green Line.
