Housing Options for GW Law Students
Our housing site is designed to help introduce you to living in Washington, D.C., and to provide you with information about the different housing options available to GW Law students.
Keep in mind the information is subject to change at any time; the average rent reported for each neighborhood is by no means a concrete minimum or maximum, as many factors go into rental prices in DC. Rent varies widely in the District and beyond, can change depending upon the season, and tends to increase each year.
In addition to being the ideal location in the country to study law, Washington is also one of the best places in the country to live. Ratings groups that consider such factors as average education and income levels, employment opportunities, diversity, climate, culture and the arts, outdoor recreation, and professional sports frequently place Washington among their top picks.
For those unaccustomed to living in a major metropolitan area, Washington may seem a very expensive place to live. The housing market in Washington is very competitive, driving up rent costs and extending wait lists to the more popular apartment complexes. For this reason, it takes some advance planning and a good strategy for students on a budget to find an apartment that fits their needs. That being said, Washington offers law students a vast array of housing options both in the District and throughout the suburban metropolitan area. Most law students make housing selections based on personal preferences regarding convenience, comfort, and economics. For those students interested in exploring off-campus housing options elsewhere in the District or the nearby Maryland and Virginia suburbs, the D.C. area offers a variety of neighborhoods to fit any personality and housing preference.
