Advanced Standing (Transfer Students)
Students may transfer to the Law School after completing one year of legal studies at a law school accredited by the American Bar Association. The primary factor considered in an admission decision is the student’s first-year performance. Transfer students may apply for admission to the Law School for either the fall or spring semester. The deadlines for submission of transfer applications are June 15 for the fall semester and December 1 for the spring semester.
To consider an applicant for admission as a transfer student, the Admissions Office must receive the following:
- A completed application for admission (including all required supplements requested in the application, such as personal statement, resume, etc.), submitted via LSAC, accompanied by an application fee of $80.
- An official law school transcript sent directly from the school to the Law School Admissions Office.
- An official undergraduate transcript.
- A record of LSAT scores.
- A letter from the dean of the applicant's law school, stating that he or she is in good academic standing, sent directly from the school to the Law School Admissions Office.
Students may transfer a maximum of 28 credit hours from prior studies at an ABA-accredited law school; in order for a course to be eligible for transfer credit, a grade of C- or better (under the previous school’s grading system) must have been earned. All courses for which credit hours are transferred will be reflected on the Law School transcript with grades of CR (Credit). Transferred credit hours will have no effect on the Law School grade-point average.
Transfer Early Action - Deadline: March 1, 2012
Applicants who apply for fall 2012 transfer admission by March 1st will automatically be considered through the Law School's Early Action Program and will be notified of a decision by early May. An applicant must have three reported grades from the first semester on his or her official law school transcript. Second semester grades are not needed to apply through Early Action, though admission is contingent upon maintaining a B average for the remaining first-year courses. Admission through Early Action is non-binding.
Visiting Students
A student who is in good academic standing as a degree candidate at an ABA-accredited school may be admitted to the Law School as a visiting student in order to earn credit for transfer to his or her home institution. While the vast majority of visiting students do their course work at the Law School during the summer session, students may apply for visiting student status during the fall or spring semester. Admission will be based primarily on space availability.
To consider an applicant for admission as a visiting student, the Admissions Office must receive the following:
- A completed application for admission (including all required supplements requested in the application such as personal statement, resume, etc.), submitted via LSAC, accompanied by an application fee of $80. The personal statement should include your reasons for wanting to visit at GW Law.
- An official law school transcript sent directly from the school to the Law School Admissions Office.
- A letter from the dean of the applicant’s law school, stating that he or she is in good academic standing and approving the applicant’s visiting status at GW Law.
Please note that the Law School will not issue an I-20 form for visiting international students.
The deadlines for application materials (except for those applying for Transfer Early Action) are June 15 for the fall semester, December 1 for the spring semester, and May 15 for the summer session.
