Diversity at GW Law

At The George Washington University Law School, we are committed to ensuring that each of our students gains an understanding of various substantive areas of law, an ability to utilize the tools of practice, and an appreciation of the importance of diversity in the legal arena.

We strive to help our students become well-balanced, contributing members of our profession.  We believe it is our job to prepare each of them to handle an array of client issues and to be able to deliver zealous representation to individuals from a spectrum of personal and socio-economic backgrounds.

We are focused on maintaining as diverse a law school community at GW Law as is the community in which we are located, Washington, DC.  Diversity is not limited to racial or ethnic diversity; rather, it includes, among other things, diversity of thought, diversity of cultural background, diversity of gender, diversity of race, diversity of religion, diversity of education, and diversity of geographic region. Our admissions process is dedicated to composing a class that values diversity in its broadest sense.

The individuals who are members of GW Law’s fall 2008 entering class are 43% women and 23% students of color.  Two hundred and seven undergraduate colleges and universities, 44 states, and 6 foreign countries are represented in this class.  The average age is 25.

The GW Law student body takes advantage of and fosters the richness of our diversity by supporting approximately 50 different student organizations.  These organizations offer a wide array of programming throughout the year and provide our students with opportunities to network with individuals who are members of national organizations sharing common interests.

We are proud to be part of a large and national academic institution and to reside in the heart of one of the most important cities in the world.  We celebrate our diversity through our teaching, our learning, our scholarly pursuits, and our contributions to the local, regional, and world communities.
