Financial Aid Eligibility

Enrollment & Other Requirements for Loan Eligibility

In order to borrow loans under any of the Federal Title IV programs (Stafford, Perkins, GradPLUS) and/or private educational loans you must:

  • be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
  • be registered at least half time in each semester of the loan period for which funds are requested. For this purpose, half-time enrollment is 6 credits for J.D. students and 5 credits for LL.M. students. The total number of credit hours for which you register is used to determine the education cost for the loan period.
  • be registered with the Selective Service (if required)
  • be enrolled in a degree program
  • be making satisfactory academic progress
  • not be in default or owe a refund on any federal grant or education loan. If you have defaulted on a federal loan you should contact your lender/guarantee agency immediately to inquire about policies on reinstatement of Title IV loan eligibility

J.D. students are eligible to apply for need-based grants from the Law School only in the first three years of full-time study or the first four years of part-time study.
