Federal Perkins Loans

Loans under this program are awarded by the Law School, in varying amounts and at a fixed 5% interest rate, to a limited number of entering and continuing students.

The combined undergraduate and graduate amount you may borrow is $18,000.

Repayment may be made over a five- to ten-year period, depending upon the amount borrowed, beginning six to nine months after graduation.

Like the Federal Stafford loan, the government pays the interest on Perkins while you are enrolled in school at least half-time, during the six- to nine-month grace period, and during approved periods of deferment of repayment.

How to Apply for Perkins Loans

By applying for GW Need-Based Tuition Grants, you are automatically considered for a Perkins Loan. Please refer to the section on applying for tuition grants for more information.

If you receive a Federal Perkins Loan as part of your GW aid package, GW will send you, during the summer prior to the start of school, a Master Promissory Note (MPN) to sign, and a Perkins Questionnaire to complete. You need to return both to GW prior to the beginning of classes.
