The nine-month budget (summer expenses not included) is our estimate of the living expenses of the average student at law school. The items listed above are the only expenses allowed a student; the minimum and reasonable necessities required to get you through law school. Individual costs may vary. In particular, rents in the District have increased sharply in recent years. Students trying to curtail housing expenses will need to share accommodations. Our academic year budget assumes you will have at least one roommate. The budget will not be increased for expenses related to owning a car, moving from your home to D.C., loss of income due to moving from another part of the country, child care provided by your non-working spouse, or credit card debt.
As you construct your own budget for living expenses, keep our annual total in mind. The total amount of financial aid you receive may not exceed the school's cost of attendance. Unless you have a serious, documented emergency expense, the Financial Aid Committee cannot increase the standard cost of attendance for you. If you keep track of expenses now, you will have an idea of your budget and where you can cut back once in law school. Project your total costs and resources for three or four years of enrollment.
