QUICK GUIDE:  LOCATING BOOKS

Search JACOB, the online catalog of the Jacob Burns Law Library

  • Search by author, title, keyword, subject, or call number.

Do a Basic Search in the ALADIN Catalog to locate materials in the GWU Gelman Library

  • The ALADIN Catalog provides information about materials found in the collections of the WRLC (Washington Research Libraries Consortium) member libraries, which includes the Gelman Library.
  • Select "George Washington" to limit a search to the Gelman Library.
  • GW Law students may check out materials from the Gelman Library.
  • Use the Jacob Burns Law Library's InterLibrary Loan (ILL) Service's ILL Request Form to obtain materials from other WRLC member libraries (please see information below on WorldCat for note on including the OCLC number in the "Notes" field of the ILL Request Form).

Search the ShareLaw catalog

  • ShareLaw is a partnership of six academic law libraries in the U.S. designed to facilitate the expedited request and delivery of books among the libraries. The partner law libraries are GW, University of California, Berkeley, University of Miami, University of Texas at Austin, University of Washington, and Yale University.
  • Searching the ShareLaw catalog may be done directly (by clicking on the link above), or by entering a search into JACOB and then clicking on the "ShareLaw" button at the top of the screen (this applies whether or not there is a JACOB record for the book being searched).
  • When the ShareLaw record for the book appears, click on "Request this Item" to obtain the book.

Search the WorldCat database

  • Use to locate books in libraries (large academic (law and non-law), law firm, government, public and association libraries) in the DC area and worldwide.
  • Enter word(s) in the search boxes and select the type of search from the pull down menu.
  • Select "author" to search for a personal author or organization; "title" to search for a title of a work.
  • Searches can be limited by type of material (book, video, etc.) and publication date.
  • Use the Jacob Burns Law Library's InterLibrary Loan (ILL) Service's ILL Request Form to borrow books not owned by the GWU Gelman Library or the Jacob Burns Law Library (note: please, if possible, include the OCLC number found at the bottom of the WorldCat record in the "Notes" field of the ILL Request Form).
