Law in Print & Film

Films with Legal Themes

The theory behind our film list is inclusiveness: does the film in question treat a legal theme, or touch upon the law in some way?  If so, it appears on the list.  Our legal films range from Witness for the Prosecution to Disorder in the Court, and feature players from Sir Laurence Olivier to the Three Stooges.  The choice is yours.

The law is a key theme in many films, spanning decades of filmmaking from the silent era to the present.  Among the nearly 300 films listed, we have marked the ones you may want to see first.  Try one of the classics bearing an asterisk (double asterisks mark the "must see" classics), or one of the contemporary films bearing a "+."

For descriptions, ratings, and discussion of sixty-nine legal films, please see Reel Justice: The Courtroom Goes to the Movies, by Paul Bergman and Michael Asimow (Kansas City, Missouri: Andrews and McMeel, 1996).  Useful and entertaining articles include Paul J. Mastrangelo, "Lawyers and the Law: A Filmography," at 3 Legal Reference Services Quarterly 31 (Winter 1983);  Roy M. Mersky, "Law and Popular Culture in the Film Collection at the Tarlton Law Library," 16:3 Legal Reference Services Quarterly 45 (1998);  and Patric M. Verone, "The Twelve Best Trial Movies," at 75 American Bar Association Journal 96 (November 1989).  Film guides with plot synopses and cast lists include the comprehensive DVD & Video Guide 2006, by Mick Martin and Marsha Porter, Leonard Maltin’s 2006 Movie Guide, and the more selective TLA Video and DVD Guide 2005: The Discerning Filmlover's Guide, edited by David Bleiler.  Remember reel.com, ccvideo.com, and amazon.com as tools for checking film availability, and netflix.com for rentals.
