About GW Law
Established in 1865, The George Washington University Law School is the oldest law school in the District of Columbia. GW is also one of the largest schools in the country with a total enrollment of approximately 1,860 students. As a national school, GW does not emphasize any particular region in its instruction; therefore, it prepares men and women to meet the challenges of legal practice in any part of the country. The Law School's curriculum of more than 250 elective courses and broad range of special academic opportunities are designed to give its students the skills they need to perform at their best in any setting - be it a large or small firm, public interest organization, government agency, academia, or the judiciary - and in every capacity - as counselor, litigator, mediator, negotiator, legislator, or lobbyist.
GW's J.D. student body is diverse, coming from nearly every state and a number of foreign countries. In 2003 an entering class of 536 was selected from more than 11,687 applicants from more than 700 colleges and universities. Forty-three percent of the class were women and thirty-one percent were minorities. Our students are diverse in terms of their backgrounds, educational and employment experiences, talents and interests.
In addition to the JD program, approximately 250 students, many from abroad, are enrolled as candidates for the Master of Laws degree in either the general LL.M. program or one of the following specialized areas: environmental law, government procurement law, intellectual property law, international and comparative law or litigation and dispute resolution.
