Overview

The animal law program at GW Law is diverse and comprehensive, with the goal of graduating young lawyers who will be among the first generation of lawyers, judges, and legislators to address the widespread problems of cruelty and neglect. 

GW's program does not focus exclusively on animal "rights", but on animal "law" which includes: 

  • Working within the current legal system to effect short-range improvement for the welfare and protection of all animals, and concurrently
  • Working toward the longer-range goal of altering the perception of non-human animals and the relationship among humans and non-human animals in law and society.

Since 2001, The George Washington University Law School has expanded from having one animal law seminar to a program that includes the following:
