Teaching Compassion in DC Public Schools

The George Washington University Law School is working with the Animal Law and Law in Public Service Committees of the American Bar Association’s Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section (TIPS) and Humane Education Advocates Reaching Teachers (HEART), a non-profit public charity, to promote their Humane Education Public Service Project.  The goal of Humane Education is to foster compassion, empathy, and respect for all life by addressing several important animal-related issues. The topics for the humane education classes include: pet care and responsibility, the importance of spay/neuter, anti-cruelty, the operations of the local animal shelter, and awareness of the many “wild” animals that share our urban space and how the law addresses our coexistence. Fred, the dog, is a frequent visitor to the classes. His loyal, sweet, and happy personality infects the class with a spirit of love and kindness.

Big Mac The Student Animal Legal Defense Fund (SALDF) hosts Big Mac, the Humane Society's mobile adoption van, on the Quad.
