Public Interest and Pro Bono
Print Version
Overview

The faculty and administration of GW Law believe that active participation in public interest activities is not only a professional obligation, but also a great enhancement to the enjoyment and meaning of the practice of law. Therefore, the Law School endeavors to provide its students with encouragement and support to participate in meaningful public interest activities.

A student–faculty Public Interest Committee publicizes and encourages student participation in volunteer legal activities within the Law School and Washington, DC community. The Committee organizes Law School events that bring together students and public service providers. The Committee also administers the Law School’s Pro Bono Program, which extends special commendation at graduation to students who complete a certain number of pro bono hours.

The Student Bar Association sponsors a fall student group fair at which all students can learn about student organizations, including those that focus on public interest.

The Career Development Office has a counselor dedicated to public interest counseling and actively promotes public interest opportunities for students, including the Equal Justice Works Career Fair, held each fall in Washington, DC, and the GW Law and Georgetown Public Sector Recruiting Program. The CDO also provides public interest online job search resources.
