Biographical Sketch
After receiving his J.D. and Ph.D. (as a Russell Sage Fellow in Law and the Social Sciences), Professor Dienes began teaching law and political science at the University of Houston. He subsequently held a similar joint appointment at American University before joining the Law School faculty in 1980.

He has been a visiting professor at Cornell University and the University of Indiana law schools and has taught in the University of California, San Diego, summer law programs in Guadalajara, Dublin, and Oxford. Professor Dienes took a year’s leave of absence in 1988 to serve as general counsel to U.S. News and World Report and he continued to serve as a legal consultant to the magazine until August 2002.

Professor Dienes wrote or co-wrote nine books, monographs, and numerous articles in the areas of constitutional law and communications law. His latest treatise is the seventh edition of his co-authored casebook, Constitutional Law: Principles and Policy. His co-written book, Newsgathering and the Law (1999), is now in its third edition, and he has co-written a widely used outline and nutshell on constitutional law and a nutshell on First Amendment law.
