Biographical Sketch
Francesca Bignami specializes in the law of the European Union and comparative public law. She is the author of numerous articles on comparative privacy law, comparative administrative law, and rights and accountability in global governance. She is currently working on a book-length study on comparative traditions of administrative law, as well as a casebook on EU Law.
From 2000 to 2008, Professor Bignami was assistant professor and then professor of law at Duke University, where she also served as the director of the Center for European Studies. In 2006-2007, she was a visiting professor and John Harvey Gregory Lecturer on World Organization at Harvard Law School. Professor Bignami has also taught at the European University Institute of Florence (Academy of European Law), at the Boston College Law School, in the Masters Program on Public Administration at the University of Rome "La Sapienza," and at the Libera UniversitĂ Internazionale degli Studi Sociali in Rome, Italy. She has been a visiting fellow at the Center for European Studies, Harvard University, and the Jean Monnet Center at the NYU School of Law. Her research has been supported, among others, by the German Marshall Fund and the Fulbright Program.
Professor Bignami received her B.A. magna cum laude from Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges and her M.Sc. from Oxford University. She then served for one year in the European Commission in Brussels where she worked on EU research and development policy. In 1996, she graduated from Yale Law School, where she was an editor of the Yale Law Journal. After law school, she clerked for Judge Stephen F. Williams, U.S. Court of Appeals, D.C. Circuit, and she then served as a stagiaire for Advocate General Philippe Léger of the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg.
Professor Bignami serves as chair of the Rulemaking Advisory Group of the ABA Project on EU Administrative Law and as a member of the academic advisory board of the Electronic Privacy Information Center.
