Michael J. Surgalla, Jr., joined the U.S. Department of Justice in 1987 after several years in private practice. He began his government career as a trial attorney in the New York District of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). For over 21 years, he has worked for DOJ’s Criminal Division in Washington, DC, where he is assigned to the Human Rights and Special Prosecutions Section (HRSP). Prior to joining HRSP, Mr. Surgalla worked in the Office of International Affairs and the Domestic Security Section. His current areas of focus are border security and gross violations of human rights and humanitarian law. Mr. Surgalla’s prior teaching experience includes teaching International Criminal Law at the Columbus School of Law at Catholic University.
