Biographical Sketch
Professor Carrillo has nearly 20 years experience as a human rights attorney, professor and scholar. He came to the Law School faculty in 2005 from Columbia Law School, where he served as the director of the Human Rights Clinic in 2002-03. He joined Columbia’s Human Rights Institute (HRI) in 1999 as the Henkin Senior Fellow, co-taught the CLS Human Rights Clinic in 2000-01, and served as lecturer in law and associate director of the HRI’s Transitional Justice Program in 2001-02. Prior to that, he worked as a legal advisor to the United Nations in El Salvador, as well as for non-governmental organizations in his native Colombia, where he also taught international law and human rights. Since 2005 Professor Carrillo has been a senior advisor on human rights to the U.S. Agency on International Development (USAID) in Colombia. He is the author of numerous publications in English and Spanish on topics in public international law, international human rights and humanitarian law, and transitional justice.
