About DV LEAP
DV LEAP is the leader in appellate advocacy for domestic violence victims in the District of Columbia and elsewhere. It is shaping development of the law nationally and establishing a model increasingly emulated by organizations and advocates across the country as they fight for victims in our courts. DV LEAP's advocacy extends to the US Supreme Court, and it helps train judges, lawyers, legislators, students and advocates nationwide.
DV LEAP is the first organization in the country -- the only one in DC -- dedicated to providing appellate representation to victims who were denied justice at trial. Over 25 law firms are in our pro bono network, 16 of whom have already assisted in DV LEAP cases. DV LEAP is also working to support the appellate advocacy of prosecutors and defense counsel where domestic violence victims have become ensnared in the criminal justice system.
The Mary Byron Foundation, in recognition of what it calls "exemplary work," has awarded DV LEAP its Celebrating Solutions Award for "outstanding efforts to help break the cycle of domestic violence" and providing a "model for the nation." This recognition is welcome evidence that DV LEAP is making a difference.
About The Mary Byron Foundation
The Mary Byron Foundation, a public grant-making charity based in Louisville, Kentucky, funds programs throughout the United States that are working to stop domestic violence.
The Foundation seeks innovative efforts that extend beyond crisis management to attack the root causes of this nationwide epidemic and prevent the violence from infecting the next generation. Contributions from individuals, foundations, and corporations make it possible for the Mary Byron Foundation to serve as a clearinghouse of proven, replicable solutions.
The Mary Byron Foundation is named in memory of a Louisville woman whose murder led to the creation of VINE, the National Victim Notification Network. Appriss Inc., the company that created and continues to provide this life-saving service, donated seed money to help establish the Mary Byron Foundation in 2000.
