Ben Gupta Memorial Scholarship
Vinod Gupta Endows $1 Million Scholarship for International Law Students in Memory of His Son
The Ben Gupta Endowed Fund for International Legal Education Will Support Students from Developing Countries
WASHINGTON—Businessman Vinod Gupta is funding a $1 million scholarship at George Washington University Law School for international law students in memory of his son, Ben Gupta. Starting in the 2013-2014 academic year, the Ben Gupta Endowed Fund for International Legal Education will provide scholarships to students from the developing world who need financial assistance to study at GW Law.
The Ben Gupta Endowed Fund for International Legal Education is named for Mr. Gupta's son Ben who passed away in December, 2011, while enrolled in the joint J.D. / M.B.A. degree program at George Washington University. Ben Gupta's brothers Alex and Jess helped establish the focus for this memorial fund, recognizing the impact Ben displayed as an advocate for educational opportunity and international cross cultural engagement.
"Ben was a friendly, engaging person who was dedicated to his law and business studies and to his GW classmates, including our many international students," said Susan Karamanian, Associate Dean for International and Comparative Legal Studies, and a friend of the Gupta family. "He had a lively, generous spirit that was apparent upon our first meeting. He loved people and life. Ben took a leadership role in organizing a student trip to the Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur in spring 2010. He was dedicated to building strong connections between the United States and India, particularly among students from those two countries."
A dynamic student, Ben is well-remembered by faculty at both the George Washington School of Business and the Law School. "Ben was a leader on the GW campus," said Professor David Fontana. "It was as clear as could be that he was bound to be not just a great presence on our campus, but also one of our greatest graduates."
