C-LEAF in NY Event Explores European Financial Crisis
On December 6, GW’s Center for Law, Economics & Finance (C-LEAF) hosted the event, “Headwinds in the Global Economy and Strategies for Regaining Traction” at New York’s Penn Club. The discussion featured distinguished panelists Corrine Ball (J.D. ’78), Partner, Jones Day; Paul N. Roth, Founding Partner, Shulte Roth & Zabel; and The Hon. John W. Snow (J.D. ’67), President, JWS Associates and former Secretary of the Treasury. Dean Paul Schiff Berman Provost Steven Lerman also offered remarks.
“GW’s Center for Law, Economics & Finance is uniquely positioned to bridge the often intractable gaps between the DC world of regulatory policy and the New York world of financial and business activity,” Dean Berman said. “This event is just one of the many ways that we are increasing our presence in New York in order to provide thought-leadership on key areas of law and policy.”
Discussion focused on the current financial crisis in Europe and what can be done to create more sustainable pathways for the future of the regulatory and financial systems. The panelists also addressed monetary policy and a look at ties to the financial collapse of 2007 and 2008. The gathering gave more than 70 professors, alumni, students, and members of the business and law communities a forum for this dialogue. Lawrence Cunningham, Henry St. George Tucker III Research Professor of Law and Director of C-LEAF in New York, moderated the discussion.
“Today’s program provided an outstanding example of how GW Law and C-LEAF can bring together academic experts and leaders from government and private practice to analyze urgent issues of public policy and offer constructive solutions,” said Arthur Wilmarth, Professor of Law and Executive Director of C-LEAF. “In order to address real-world problems, GW Law and C-LEAF recognize that we need to draw on real-world experience from participants in the government and private sectors, as well as our faculty scholarship.”
