Amanda Karras is the Deputy General Counsel and Director of Legal Advocacy for the International Municipal Lawyers Association (IMLA). In this capacity, she coordinates IMLA’s legal advocacy services for municipalities seeking amicus assistance before the United States Supreme Court and in some cases of national importance, before federal and state appellate courts. Ms. Karras helps draft, edit, and oversee the filing of approximately forty amicus briefs per year on issues of importance to local governments. She is a regular public speaker regarding local government issues. In her capacity as Deputy General Counsel, Ms. Karras also handles many aspects of IMLA’s general governance, including employee hiring and supervision, budgeting and finance issues, and conference planning. Prior to joining IMLA, Ms. Karras was an employment litigator and counselor with Hirsch Roberts Weinstein, a small boutique law firm in Boston, MA. Ms. Karras started out her legal career at Ropes & Gray where she focused on employment law and general commercial litigation.
