There are more than 200 Student Bar Associations at ABA-accredited law schools around the country. But the top SBA? That’s right here at GW Law, at least according to The ABA Law Student Division, which presented GW Law student leadership with its National Achievement Award earlier this year.

The Student Law Division selects an annual winner based on applications that it receives from member schools. Before submission, each application must be affirmed by the dean of the law school. The applications then undergo a rigorous review of six main criteria: the organization’s events and programming, communication with the student body, improvements to student life, interaction with faculty and administrators, leadership within the local community, and role within ABA leadership.

The award validates the SBA’s hard work last year, led by former President Helen Clemens, JD ’15. Notably, the SBA created the Pre-OCI (On Campus Interviews) Networking Reception, a summer event that helped created create connections and generated enthusiasm in advance of the on campus fall recruitment program, and a GW Law Wellness Day in partnership with the Dean of Students Office. The latter initiative transformed the Student Conference Center into a lounge space replete with Legos, yoga sessions, and staff from the University Counseling Center. Also new last year, the SBA overhauled its website, worked with the Career Development Office to offer free professional headshots, and reorganized the SBA Mentoring program.

Current SBA President George Soussou agreed that the award highlights the SBA’s efforts. “The main goal for our organization is simply to improve the GW Law experience for students, both inside and outside of the classroom,” he said. “To have this work validated by the American Bar Association providing the GW SBA with the Best SBA award is a testament to the hard work that the entire organization puts forward each and every day. We look forward to continuing this work and using our past experiences in the organization as building blocks to create an even better future GW Law.”

Current SBA Vice President of Outreach Shelby Cuomo, Chief of Staff Jesse Isleman, and Executive Vice President Adam Weiss attended the ABA Annual Meeting on August 1 in Chicago to receive the award.

“It was a great experience just to be able to represent GW Law at the conference, and to be able to discuss the pressing issues that impact all law students,” Mr. Isleman said. “To be chosen as the best SBA out of the 206 ABA accredited law schools was truly an honor, and being able to receive the award on behalf of the GW SBA is among my proudest moments in law school.”
