Michael Lee Rankin was appointed associate judge of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia by President Ronald Reagan in 1985. He is a former presiding judge of the court's Criminal Division. Prior to his appointment he was an assistant U.S. attorney and a federal public defender. Judge Rankin serves by Mayoral appointment on the Washington, D.C., Police Training and Standards Board.
