Jeffrey Axelrad

Jeffrey Axelrad served as director of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Torts Branch from 1977 to 2003, after serving as chief of the Information and Privacy Section, which he established, from 1975 to 1977. From 1967 to 1975, he was a Civil Division trial attorney. 

He has received numerous awards and honors including the Civil Division's highest honor, the Stanley D. Rose Memorial Award; the Army's highest civilian award, the "Commander's Award for Public Service;" a Presidential Meritorious Executive award; and the Office of Management of Budget General Counsel’s award. 

While at the Department of Justice, Mr. Axelrad handled many seminal cases raising both statutory and constitutional issues in the contexts of a broad variety of federal programs, and was actively involved in policy development, including serving as assistant to the chair of the Domestic Policy Council’s Tort Reform Working Group. His published articles discuss federal tort law and alternative dispute resolution.
