Charles B. Craver, Freda H. Alverson Professor of Law, delivered the 2018 Lawrence Lecture on Dispute Resolution at the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. Drawing on his decades of experience, Professor Craver discussed the stages and styles of negotiations; identified distinctions between different types of negotiation; and explained the six stages of negotiation: preparation, preliminary, information, distributive, closing, and integrative. Finally, he held a sexual harassment exercise to demonstrate how negotiators can evaluate identical bargaining situations differently.

Professor Craver was also honored for his 2018 ABA Dispute Resolution Section Award for Outstanding Scholarly Work. "I was deeply honored to receive the award for Outstanding Scholarly Work and to be listed among a group of exceptional individuals in the Dispute Resolution field," he said. Professor Craver's writing has been described as prolific and influential. His work on negotiation, particularly relating to the modern use of distributive negotiation tactics and how to respond to them, has spawned other research and changed how lawyers approach negotiation. Professor Craver has written seven Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) texts, including Effective Legal Negotiation and Settlement, first published in 1986 and now in its 8th edition. He has written 30 ADR journal articles and 35 online ADR articles over his career. Several of those articles include data from negotiation simulation outcomes his students have reached that form the basis for discussions of the impact of a negotiator's race and sex on negotiation outcomes. Professor Craver has received awards for outstanding teaching from three different law schools and has taught negotiation skills to more than 90,000 lawyers throughout the world.
