74th Annual Van Vleck Competition Recap

Congratulations to 3Ls Simon Poser and Angela Seeger for winning the 2024 Van Vleck Constitutional Law Moot Court Competition, and thank you to The Honorable Patricia Lee, JD '02, Nevada Supreme Court, The Honorable Cheryl Ann Krause, US Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and The Honorable Cornelia T. L. Pillard, US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit for presiding over the finals. The Van Vleck Law Moot Court Competition was held in the standing-room-only Betts Theater and was an electrifying event that showcased the exceptional talents and intellectual prowess of participating students as noted by 2023 Van Vleck Constitutional Law Moot Court Competition winner Lauren Arquette, Class of 2024, saying "Van Vleck really illustrates the best part of GW Law."

2023 Van Vleck Constitutional Law Moot Court Competition Winner


The problem presented at this year's competition resonated with the pressing issues facing America today. The Honorable Patricia Lee remarked, “We were not unanimous in our decision which speaks to how great the competition was...if you’re ever in Las Vegas, please stop by!” The competition was so fierce the judges decided to give Best Team Overall to the respondents, Angela Seeger and Simon Poser, and Best Oral Advocacy to the petitioners, Tessa Lasser and Samantha Raggio, Class of 2024. The Honorable Cheryl Ann Krause remarked “Your oral advocacy across the board is of the caliber that I would be thrilled to have in my courtroom,” and The Honorable Cornelia T. L. Pillard complemented Tessa, saying "Ms. Lasser impressed me a couple of times really knowing the law and different cases."

  • 1st place: Kyle Atwood and Nicholas Chesrown (3L Sweet 16)
  • 2nd place: Nicholas Gottemoller and Zachariah Mikus (2L Sweet 16)
  • 3rd place: Erik Cervantes and Drew Weisberg (3L Quarter-finalists)

Best Oral Advocates

  • 1st place: Karsten Ball (3L Sweet 16)
  • 2nd place:  Stephon Howie (3L, representing GW Law in the Texas Young Lawyers National Trial Competition this semester)
  • 3rd place: Audrey Cheng (2L Sweet 16)
