George (Chip) Cannon, Jr. is the head of the energy regulation, markets and enforcement practice at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer and Feld LLP. Mr. Cannon focuses his legal practice on federal and state regulatory issues associated with the production, delivery and sale of electric energy and related products from both conventional and renewable energy resources. He advises his clients on matters under the jurisdiction of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), including the structure of the nation’s competitive wholesale power markets and the requirements for participation in those markets, as well as the open access requirements allowing generation resources to access the transmission grid. Mr. Cannon regularly negotiates and drafts energy management and similar agreements to help optimize the value of generation resources. He also advises clients on supply chain issues affecting the U.S. power sector, including the Department of Energy’s recent announcements on the bulk power system, and provides legal guidance related to incentive-based programs associated with the development of renewable energy resources and other innovative technologies.
Mr. Cannon is the vice-chair of the Electricity Steering Committee of the Energy Bar Association. Mr. Cannon is also recognized by Chambers USA as a leading practitioner for Energy: Electricity (Regulatory and Litigation). He was also recognized by the Washington Business Journalas an LGBTQ+ Business Leader in 2021, and by the National Law Journal as an Equality Trailblazer in 2019.
