GW Law alumna Cherissa Lindsay, JD ‘25, has been chosen as an Equal Justice Works Fellow, hosted by Volunteer Legal Advocates.
The Equal Justice Works fellowship provides current law students and recent graduates with the opportunity to jumpstart their legal careers through placements at organizations like Volunteer Legal Advocates, which is dedicated to representing survivors of abuse and vulnerable children in critical legal matters. Lindsay’s fellowship is sponsored by King & Spalding.
Lindsay’s fellowship project focuses on child advocacy, identifying unmet academic needs, and collaborating with attorneys, courts, and schools to best support children through guardian ad litem work.
"GW Law helped prepare me for this opportunity through its Equal Justice Works information session and the support of my mentor, Ashley Carter, a former Equal Justice Works Fellow,” Lindsay said. “Her guidance was invaluable throughout the application process. I am so excited to pursue my passion for advocating for students with unmet educational needs and helping ensure they have access to the resources and support necessary to succeed."
While at GW Law, Lindsay was the SBA president for the 2024-25 academic year. She also worked as a student attorney in the Access to Justice Clinic–Family Law Division as part of the Jacob Burns Community Legal Clinics Program.
“Cherissa is an extremely hard-working, thoughtful, and dedicated young attorney,” said Lindsay’s mentor, Ashley Carter, JD ‘17, Visiting Associate Professor of Clinical Law and Director of the Criminal Appeals and Post Conviction Services Clinic. “Supervising her during her time as a clinical student was an absolute pleasure, and I was thrilled when she told me that she wanted to pursue a public interest career through an Equal Justice Works Fellowship.
“The project that she designed will help to break down barriers for litigants struggling to navigate the legal process, and will help children better access the special educational services that they are entitled to. I know that she will have a positive and lasting impact on her clients and our community.”
