Law schools play a pivotal role in preparing students for the bar exam by providing comprehensive legal education that equips them with the knowledge, skills, and analytical abilities needed to succeed on the exam. At GW Law our commitment to supporting students in preparing for and passing the bar exam is unwavering.

"It's crucial to focus intently on supporting our graduating class, especially those taking the bar for the first time, and to offer demonstrable support to graduates needing to sit for the bar exam a second time," said Dean Dayna Bowen Matthew.

Over the past year, GW Law has implemented substantial efforts to enhance our Bar support infrastructure. Dean Matthew explains, "We've established a Bar Exam Support Committee, led by faculty and staff under the guidance of the Dean for Strategic Initiatives, to ensure a proactive approach."

At GW Law, two pilot programs have been launched. One caters to currently enrolled students preparing for the 2024 summer bar exam. The other assists graduates in taking the exam in February 2024. "These programs aim to provide robust support and cover the costs of tutoring services,” says Dean Matthew.

Looking ahead, the Bar Exam Support Committee will evaluate the pilot programs and consultant recommendations to inform future strategies. Dean Matthew emphasizes, "With the impending introduction of the NextGen Bar Exam, a comprehensive approach is imperative. We remain committed to preparing students for diverse bar exam requirements."

Moreover, our commitment extends beyond academic preparation. The Dean of Students Office provides extensive guidance on the entire bar application process. Dean Matthew underscores, "We're leveraging technology to offer tailored advising and ensuring alumni seeking bar admissions support are also accommodated."

As we brace for the changes ahead, including the transition to the NextGen Bar Exam in 2026, the Dean of Students Office remains vigilant. Dean Matthew concludes, "Our dedication to supporting students through every stage of this demanding journey underscores our unwavering commitment to their success."
