Harry R. Hughes

Former Maryland Governor Harry R. Hughes, JD ‘52, passed away on March 13, 2019, at the age of 92. He served as Maryland’s governor from 1979 to 1987.

Mr. Hughes grew up in Denton, Maryland and enlisted in the U.S. Navy Air Corps at age 17 during World War II. After the war, he graduated from the University of Maryland in 1949 and earned a JD from GW Law in 1952.

During his political career, Mr. Hughes served as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates and the Maryland Senate. He later became the first secretary of Maryland’s Department of Transportation and Maryland’s 57th governor. Mr. Hughes was an advocate for the environment and is credited for working to restore the health of the Chesapeake Bay.

Mr. Hughes was married to the late Patricia Donoho and had two daughters, Ann Fink and Elizabeth Hughes.
