Paul Frieden was an attorney with the U.S. Department of Labor for 40 years. For the majority of that time, he worked in the Fair Labor Standards Division of the Office of the Solicitor. Mr. Frieden served as the Counsel for Appellate Litigation in the Fair Labor Standards Division for more than 21 years. In that capacity, he was responsible for overseeing the Division’s large and diverse appellate docket, which entailed supervising the briefing of cases, and the presentation of oral arguments, before the United States Courts of Appeals throughout the country and the Administrative Review Board. He also worked on several important Supreme Court labor cases over the years.  

Mr. Frieden is the recipient of both the Department of Labor’s Mary-Helen Mautner Award for Excellence in Appellate Advocacy and the Department’s Distinguished Career Service Award. In 2020, he received the Philip Arnow Award, granted annually to one Department of Labor employee in recognition of superior accomplishments and service to the Department. It is the highest honor that the Department bestows.
