Dean Blake D. Morant was joined by Nancy Rose, JD '83, for a "Conversation with the Dean." The Career Center, Dean of Students Office, and GW Law Student Bar Association co-sponsored the event.
As a founding partner of Schreck Rose Dapello Adams Berlin & Dunham, a leading entertainment law firm with offices in New York and Beverly Hills, Ms. Rose helps clients translate their creative genius into commercial success on Broadway, television, and the big screen. Her client list includes Broadway powerhouse Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of the blockbuster musical Hamilton; Beau Willimon, creator of House of Cards; Tony Kushner, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Angels in America; and lyricist and composer Stephen Schwartz, who wrote the scores for Wicked, Pippin, and Godspell.
Ms. Rose's outstanding work has earned her the coveted distinction of being consistently named to The Hollywood Reporter Top 100 Power Lawyers List and the NYC Super Lawyers List from 2007 to 2018. She also helped GW rank among the Top 10 Entertainment Law Schools nationwide on The Hollywood Reporter's Power Lawyers list.
During her discussion with Dean Morant, Ms. Rose spoke about her law school experience and how her lifelong love of the arts shaped her desire to pursue entertainment law. "It was realizing that there was a place to combine your passion with your profession," she said. Ms. Rose emphasized the importance of grit, determination, persistence, and networking when breaking into the industry and explained the critical role they played in her success. "It's really putting yourself out there, meeting as many people as you can, and learning the entertainment business," she said.
Ms. Rose closed the conversation by recounting her career highlights and the key lessons learned along the way about achieving work-life balance. "Pursue what you are passionate about. Passion combined with grit will lead to success."
The discussion was followed by an audience Q&A and the opportunity for attendees to speak with Ms. Rose.
