GW Law students had the unique chance to hear from two notable district attorneys, Larry Krasner and Alvin Bragg, last week.
Krasner, the District Attorney of Philadelphia, spoke to students in the Criminal Law Brief and Public Interest and Public Service Law Center on Monday, September 14, alongside two members of his office. In partnership with the GW Law Career Development Office, Bragg, the District Attorney of Manhattan, visited the law school on Tuesday, September 15, to talk to students about his experience as a DA and answer questions about the role.
The two events were an opportunity for GW Law students to hear about working in District Attorney offices like the Manhattan and Philadelphia offices, which are hiring law school graduates. Government employers account for a significant share of the U.S. hiring market for entry level jobs and prosecutor positions are a large portion of those, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
“I couldn’t be more grateful to both Mr. Krasner and Mr. Bragg for taking the time out of their busy schedules to speak to our students,” said GW Law Dean Dayna Bowen Matthew, who attended both events. “GW Law is committed to producing lawyers who shape the solutions to our modern times. Both of these district attorneys were able to provide invaluable insight into what that looks like in practice.”
The opportunity to hear from these two district attorneys provided students with an only-at-GW experience.
“GW Law is becoming the place to be for those interested in criminal law, and one facet of that is bringing in practitioners at the profession’s cutting edge,” Professor Thomas Frampton said. “For students who might want to become public defenders or prosecutors, there are incredible opportunities to learn here.”
The events with Krasner and Bragg were just two of many convenings throughout the school year in which students get to hear from practicing attorneys about their legal profession.
Last Monday, the Public Interest and Public Service Law Center also hosted an event with GW Law Richey Fellow Phylicia H. Hill, the director of impact litigation at LegalAid DC, on “civil rights and racial justice across practice settings.” Students in Professor Ben Chase’s Negotiations (Sports Transactions) class heard from David Falk, JD '75, a legendary sports agent, and GW Basketball Coach Chris Caputo on Wednesday, September 16.
Earlier this month, the National Security, Cybersecurity, and Foreign Relations Law Program, welcomed Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Brian Baldrate, Vice President and Chief Counsel of BAE Systems, to speak at its annual Veterans Welcome Back Reception.
