Michael Swistara

Michael Swistara, JD ’22, was awarded a Brooks Institute Emerging Scholar Fellowship for the 2021-2022 academic-year. Designed for 2L and 3L law students interested in pursuing a career in law teaching, the fellowship is administered by the Brooks Institute for Animal Rights Law and Policy.

"I am particularly interested in the intersection of animal rights law and policy with other areas of social justice,” said Mr. Swistara. “I am planning a research agenda that interprets and develops the interdisciplinary literature applying critical theory, anti-carceral feminism, and anti-racist movement lawyering to animal law.”

“Perhaps more importantly, I hope to build on my work in this area with research that seeks practical strategic recommendations for the real-world implementation of an anti-carceral ethic in animal law," said Mr. Swistara.

The fellowship provides mentoring and the opportunity for fellows to develop a scholarly agenda in the field of animal law with the goal of increasing the number of well-qualified persons who intend to pursue a faculty appointment in a United States law school and make animal law a significant component of their teaching and research.

The Brooks Institute for Animal Rights Law and Policy, Inc. is a US-based national independent think tank pursuing a paradigm shift in human responsibility towards, and value of, nonhuman animals by advancing animal law, animal policy, and related interdisciplinary studies.
