LLM in Privacy, Artificial Intelligence, and Technology Law

LLM candidates in Privacy, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Technology Law (PAT) must complete a minimum of 15 credits focused on PAT Law, including at least one 3-credit foundational course and a writing requirement satisfied through either a thesis or a 2-credit seminar graded on the basis of a research paper.
Foundational Courses
Students must take at least one of the following courses for 3 credits:
- Information Privacy Law (6486)
- Artificial Intelligence Law and Policy (6881)
Only the 3-credit version of each foundational course satisfies the foundational course requirement. The one-credit version of Information Privacy Law (6486) and the 2-credit version of Artificial Intelligence Law and Policy (6881) count toward the 15 minimum credits required for the PAT Law LLM degree, but do not satisfy the foundational course requirement. Students who take the one-credit version of Information Privacy Law (6486) must take Artificial Intelligence Law and Policy (6881) for 3 credits; students who take the 2-credit version of Artificial Intelligence Law and Policy (6881) must take Information Privacy Law (6486) for 3 credits.
In addition to the required foundational course, students must also complete at least 12 additional credits from the PAT Law Designated Course list. Students who take Information Privacy Law (6486) as their foundational course may take Artificial Intelligence Law and Policy as one of their additional PAT Law courses, and vice versa.
Writing Requirement
Students must satisfy the writing requirement either by writing a thesis related to PAT Law in connection with the LLM Thesis (6699) or by taking a 2-credit seminar graded on the basis of a research paper of at least 8,000 words that is related to PAT Law.
Students must inform the PAT Law program director of their thesis or paper topic for a determination of whether it is sufficiently related to PAT Law to satisfy the writing requirement. U.S. law school graduates in any of the LLM programs must achieve a minimum grade of B+ in the course used to fulfill their writing requirement.

Additional Credit and Degree Requirements
Students with a non-U.S. law degree who plan to take the New York bar examination may count either Constitutional Law I (6214) or Constitutional Law II (6380) toward the 15 credits required in the field.
Other courses may be approved to count toward the 15 credits in the field, with the permission of the program director.
*As with all LLM programs, students must take a total of 24 credits to earn the degree. Students who did not receive their first law degree from a US law school also must take Fundamental Issues in US Law (6694) and Legal Research and Writing for International LLM Students (6688).
