We talked to recent alumnus and former Merit Scholar, David Liss, JD '23, about his experiences at GW Law and plans for the summer. Read more about his experiences below.

1. What did you enjoy about being a GW Law student?

"My favorite part about being a GW Law student was the access to unique opportunities both in the classroom and out in the city. I was able to figure out what I want to do with my career through taking different specialized courses and externing at a variety of interesting agencies."

2. Besides getting ready for / passing the bar, what are your plans for the summer?

"This summer, I am actually doing a 6-week internship for a federal magistrate judge in my hometown while studying for the bar. Besides that, I am trying to get in as much golf as possible!"

3. What's one piece of advice you have for the incoming group of Merit Scholars?

"My one piece of advice to incoming merit scholars is to maximize your opportunities. For example, I did not fully understand the importance of clerkships and journals before law school. I opted not to do the journal competition and I am just now seeking out a federal clerkship. I’ve had great success in law school, but I wish I would have gone into law school with the mindset of needing to maximize my opportunities. You don’t need to just do well in class, you need to cultivate and maintain relationships with your professors, supervisors, and fellow students. You never know what opportunity will be around the corner."

4. How are you looking to stay involved in the GW Law community?

"I have a great set of friends in law school and I am close to multiple professors. I will be sure to stay in touch, get drinks, and keep everyone apprised of where my career is going."
