Judge Gregory E. Maggs was named this year's recipient of the Judge Advocates Foundation (JAF) Major General William K. Suter Distinguished Judicial Service Award. He was honored last month for his military and judicial accomplishments, unquestionable integrity, and his commitment to the military justice system and to the rule of law.

Judge Maggs recently was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, a civilian court that oversees the military justice system. He previously served at GW Law as a full-time faculty member for 25 years and as a co-director of the law school's National Security and U.S. Foreign Relations LLM program for eight years. In addition, Judge Maggs was a JAG officer in the U.S. Army Reserve for 28 years. His reserve assignments included three years as a military trial judge at U.S. Army courts-martial and seven years as an military appellate judge on the U.S. Army Court of Criminal Appeals.

JAF presents the award to a trial or appellate judge for past or present service in the active, reserve, or guard force. The award was created in 2007 and was named after Major General Suter who served as Clerk of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1991 until his retirement in 2013.
