"It was a tremendous honor to receive this award. I was inspired to write about Appointments Clause issues after taking constitutional law with Judge Gregory Maggs and administrative law with Professor Richard J. Pierce, Jr. The Guantanamo Tribunals raised an interesting question about political control of an agency adjudication system. I hope to continue researching issues that combine my interest in constitutional law with my passion for administrative law," said Laura Stanley, JD '22.

The American Bar Association's Gellhorn-Sargentich Law Student Essay Competition, created in 2006, honors the memory of two men, Ernest Gellhorn, a distinguished law dean, administrative law professor, and practitioner who was Chair of the Section; and Thomas Sargentich, a distinguished administrative law professor at American University's Washington College of Law who was a great friend of the Section. The goal of the competition is to encourage law students to become involved in the Section, attract students to the administrative law practice fields, and encourage scholarship in these fields.

Since graduating, Laura is currently clerking for The Honorable Stephen Schwartz on the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, and next year, she will clerk for The Honorable Ryan Nelson on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Laura Stanley's essay was also published in the George Washington Law Review.
