EVENT:
The George Washington University Law School Health Law Initiative is hosting a health law symposium that will feature a unique combination of scholars, policymakers and legislators, all discussing concrete ways to reverse this nation’s legacy of racial discrimination in each of the social determinants of health.
Dayna Bowen Matthew, dean of GW Law, will give the symposium’s keynote address. She will discuss her recently released book, Just Health: Treating Structural Racism to Heal America, which describes how the tell-tale outcomes of structural racism have entrenched racial disparities in health and that the failed promise of equal justice under law has institutionalized the burden that minoritized people suffer in housing, education, employment, criminal justice and other sectors that impact a population’s overall health.

BACKGROUND:
GW’s Health Law Initiative emphasizes the crucial role the law plays in the design and operation of the U.S. health care and public health systems. Through the study of health law at GW, students learn about the complex structure of the federal regulatory process, the relationship between federal and state health system regulation, and the relationship between federal regulation and industry stakeholders. Special attention is paid to the effect of these vast and complex legal interactions on the health of consumers, patients, and the general population.
