GW Law Excels at American Society of International Law's Research Forum

The American Society of International Law (ASIL) held its Midyear Meeting in Chicago, Illinois, November 14 -16, 2024. A highlight of the meeting was its yearly Research Forum, in which a wide range of scholars, academics, experts, and students presented papers on a diversity of issues in international law. This year Associate Dean Rosa Celorio was selected to serve as co-chair of the Research Forum, alongside Curtis A. Bradley, Allen M. Singer Distinguished Service Professor of Law at the University of Chicago Law School, and J. Benton Heath, Associate Professor of Law at Temple University Law School. Dean Celorio also co-moderated a panel with Professor Curtis A. Bradley on Lawmaking and Interpretation in International Law. Dean Celorio is currently serving in ASIL’s Executive Committee and Executive Council, its governing bodies.

Ed Swaine, Charles Kennedy Poe Research Professor at GW Law, moderated a panel on Foreign Relations Law. Professor Swaine also serves as Counselor for ASIL, a position afforded to influential experts in the field of international law. Professor Swaine also served on the ASIL committee that decided the David Caron Prize, which is awarded to the best paper presented at the Midyear Meeting by a current student or recent graduate.  

Leah Calabro, Visiting Associate Professor and Fellow of GW Law’s International and Comparative Law program, also presented her paper entitled Universal Jurisdiction over the Crime of Persecution as a Pathway to Human Rights Protections. Özge Karsu, who is currently pursuing her LLM at GW Law in International and Comparative Law, presented her paper entitled What Leads to the “Crime of Crimes”? A Comparative Analysis of Four Genocides, co- authored with Professor Kerem Gülay, Assistant Professor of International Law at Koc Law School in Turkey.

Regarding the research forum, Dean Celorio indicated “ASIL is one of the most important organizations in the world devoted to the advancement of international law. The Mid-Year Research Forum serves as an invaluable opportunity to discuss scholarship and research on critical and timely issues in the field, and to reflect on potential solutions to pressing global problems. It was an honor to co-chair the Research Forum this year, and to have GW Law well-represented in important and needed discussions with vast international implications.”
