Jack Harlan Friedenthal joined the law school in the summer of 1988 as dean and served in that capacity through June 1998. Prior to that he was the George E. Osborne Professor of Law at Stanford Law School, where he began his teaching career in 1958. He has taught courses in civil procedure, evidence, conflict of laws, trial advocacy, domestic relations, legal writing, law and poverty, and law for undergraduates. 

He served as associate dean for academic affairs at Stanford from 1984 to 1987, and he was a visiting professor at Harvard Law School and at the University of Michigan Law School. Professor Friedenthal has been a special master in a number of major federal cases including disputes between the National Football League and the Football Players Association, and has frequently served as a consultant in both the public and private sectors on matters of court procedure, employment discrimination, legal assistance programs, and foreign conflicts of laws. He currently serves as a public member of the National Architectural Accreditation Board. 

His publications include the widely used Civil Procedure, co-authored with Miller, Sexton and Hershkoff; Civil Procedure, with Kane and Miller; and Introduction to Evidence, with M. Singer. He has written numerous articles and book reviews on civil procedure and many other topics.
