GW Law hosted The Honorable Jasti Chelameswar, a Judge on the Supreme Court of India earlier this month. Judge Chelameswar held an informal discussion with Dean Blake D. Morant and a group of students on a range of topics, including free speech, the right to privacy, and the process of judicial appointments in India.

Judge Chelameswar, once a government pleader, was appointed additional judge in the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 1997. He has been chief justice of both the Guwahati and Kerala high courts where he is perceived as having done exemplary work on the green benches there. Judge Chelameswar was made a Supreme Court judge in 2011 and has delivered several landmark judgments while a member of the top court.

"It was a fantastic opportunity to connect and exchange ideas with one of India's foremost legal minds," said Sarah Freuden, Interim Program Director for International and Comparative Law, who also participated in the discussion.
