The Hon. Gregory G. Garre, former Solicitor General of the United States, visited GW Law’s Administrative Law, Issues, and Appeals (ALIA) Legal Clinic on Tuesday, November 4.

General Garre spoke to the clinic about his experience serving as the solicitor general and in private practice at Latham & Watkins LLP, providing mentoring advice to the clinic’s student attorneys. General Garre, who has taught constitutional law and United States Supreme Court practice at GW Law, was the 44th solicitor general of the United States from 2008 through 2009. He has argued over 50 cases before the Supreme Court and has briefed and served as general counsel of record in hundreds of additional Supreme Court cases.

With extensive expertise in administrative law, General Garre provided students with knowledge and advice that will support their law careers. The ALIA seminar is part of the Clinic, led by Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Associate Professor of Law Aram Gavoor.

“I am deeply appreciative of General Garre’s connection to GW Law, and the fact that we have a clinical platform on which our students can both work on multiple U.S. Supreme Court matters each semester and likewise be mentored by one of the top Supreme Court advocates of all time,” Dean Gavoor said. “As a result, our Administrative Law, Issues, and Appeals Clinic students will graduate with more appellate experience than most attorneys will have in their careers.”

In the clinic, students engage with cutting-edge, nationally-significant legal issues, and combine practical legal training with a broad array of topical issues, from federal administrative and constitutional law cases to emerging fields like international law, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity.

"Hearing from a former Solicitor General was an amazing opportunity,” said Leah Porter (Class of ’26), an ALIA Clinic student. “It really showed how the work we're already doing in the clinic and the skills we’re building translate directly into a future career."

Opportunities to hear from people who have served at top levels of the legal field such as General Garre are part of the unique DC-infused education at GW Law. Such opportunities are invaluable for professional and personal development.

"Discussing effective advocacy strategies with an alumnus who has served at the highest level was a valuable experience for professional development and personal mentorship,” said Nicholas Moeller (Class of ’26), another student in the ALIA Clinic.
